This patch is a more robust and permanent way to track years of service than the annual service pins. It also incorporates recognition for 5 years of service, whereas the “special pins” for service start at the 10 year increment. The gold laurels symbolize recognition and award for excellent service, and the black shape on the lower part of the inset pentagonal “interval” patch represents the Temple, where all Rangers will end up eventually.
